Medicare Part A
Part A is commonly referred to as "Hospital Insurance" because it pays for your care when you are admitted to a hospital or skilled nursing facility. It may also help to pay for some home health care services as well as hospice care. For qualified individuals, Medicare Part A is free. The combination of Medicare Parts A and B is often referred to as "Original Medicare".
Medicare Part B
Part B is commonly referred to as "Medical Insurance" because it covers your doctors' fees and outpatient medical expenses, including laboratory and diagnostic imaging tests, physical therapy, and durable medical equipment. Part B covers 2 types of services: medically necessary services and preventive services. Medicare Part B will have an associated monthly premium expense.
Medicare Part C
Medicare Part C is also referred to as a "Medicare Advantage" plan. It is a Medicare-approved private health insurance plan for individuals enrolled in Original Medicare, Part A and Part B that may offer additional benefits. While a Medicare Advantage plan may be a good option for some individuals, there are several important factors to consider that usually make "Original Medicare" with a supplemental insurance (Medigap) policy a better fit for most of our clients.
Medicare Part D
Choose from 2 ways to get prescription drug coverage. You can choose a Medicare Part D plan. Or, you can choose a Medicare Advantage Plan (like an HMO or PPO) that offers drug coverage. Before you make a decision about how your prescriptions are covered, you'll want to consider which option and plan will work best for your individual needs. The last thing you want to do is sign up for a prescription drug coverage plan, only to find out it doesn't cover the medications you use most frequently.
Medicare Supplement Insurance
A Medicare Supplement (also known as a Medigap Policy) is often purchased to help cover your share of costs for Part A and Part B services in Original Medicare. In most circumstances, our clients choose to enroll in Original Medicare and purchase a supplemental insurance policy. Purchasing this "Medigap" policy will help to make your medical expenses more predictable in your retirement years, so that unexpected health issues won't impact your financial future. There are several standardized plans available, each offering different benefits.
